Interview Tips
Mentoring our candidates through their interviews is arguably the most important stage in the placement process, and at Fuel Recruitment we’re always on hand to offer you advice and support. We’ve collated feedback from our clients on what they expect from interviewees into this five-point checklist:
- Be Prepared
Where is the interview being held? Is there onsite parking? Make sure you know exactly how long it will take to get there and arrive in good time. Always research the company; at the very least check out their website and have an awareness of their operations and culture. - Be Professional
It’s been said before but it bears repeating: first impressions are vital. Take care with your appearance: wearing a loud suit, intense fragrance or too much jewellery will detract from your personality and you will be remembered for the wrong reasons. Be professional when discussing your previous or current employers; revealing personal grudges or being overly critical will reflect badly back onto you. - Be Polite
Our clients report bad manners from interviewees as the behaviour most likely to leave a bad impression. After all, would you want to work with someone who is rude, disrespectful or has no concept of social etiquette? If you’re unsure of the level of formality required, mirroring the conduct and conversation style of the interviewer is a failsafe way of avoiding offence. - Be Positive
Every client wants to hire someone enthusiastic, driven, motivated and above all, positive. If you’re excited about the role and present yourself in a positive way, your enthusiasm will be infectious. However, don’t confuse confidence with arrogance. Interviewers will be put off if you start bragging or over-exaggerating your abilities. - Be Practical
Unless you have a ‘deal breaker’ figure in mind, when the topic of salary comes up state that you know a fair offer will be made based on the requirements of the role. If you’re lucky enough to be offered the position during the interview (and you want the job), accept it! If you have any doubts it’s perfectly acceptable to ask for time to consider your position.
And finally…close on a positive note by smiling, making eye contact and giving a firm handshake.
