Principal Contractor Site Manager (National Grid Substations) – Hertfordshire – Up to £600/day
About the Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Contractor Site Manager to lead and manage our projects within National Grid substations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in managing projects in high-risk environments. They will be responsible for ensuring that all site activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations, while delivering projects on time, within scope, and within budget.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Management:
    • Manage and oversee all on-site activities for projects within National Grid substations, ensuring that work is completed safely, on time, and to the highest quality standards.
    • Develop and implement detailed delivery programs and schedules, coordinating with various teams to ensure project milestones are achieved.
    • Ensure compliance with National Grid standards, procedures, and statutory regulations.
  • Health, Safety, and Environmental Management:
    • Take full responsibility for site safety, ensuring that all work is carried out in compliance with relevant HSE legislation and National Grid safety protocols.
    • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to ensure safe working practices are maintained.
    • Lead by example in promoting a strong safety culture, including regular safety briefings and toolbox talks.
  • Stakeholder Management:
    • Act as the main point of contact between the site and National Grid, local authorities, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
    • Develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, ensuring clear communication and managing expectations.
    • Facilitate coordination meetings and ensure that all parties are informed of progress, changes, and any issues that may arise.
  • Quality Assurance:
    • Oversee and manage quality control procedures to ensure all work meets the required standards and specifications.
    • Review and approve method statements, risk assessments, and other documentation to ensure they are in line with project requirements and National Grid regulations.
    • Conduct regular quality audits and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Resource Management:
    • Manage the site team, including subcontractors, ensuring that everyone understands their roles and responsibilities.
    • Allocate resources effectively, including labor, materials, and equipment, to ensure efficient project delivery.
    • Monitor and control site costs, ensuring that the project remains within budget.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate records of site activities, including progress reports, safety records, and other documentation as required by National Grid and company procedures.
    • Provide regular updates to senior management on project progress, highlighting any risks or issues that may impact the project.
    • Ensure that all project documentation is completed and submitted in a timely manner.

Key Requirements:

  • Experience:
    • Proven experience as a Site Manager or Principal Contractor on projects within National Grid substations or similar high-voltage environments.
    • Experience in managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders and high safety requirements.
  • Qualifications:
    • Relevant construction management qualification (e.g., HNC/HND, Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field).
    • SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) certification.
    • NEBOSH or IOSH certification is desirable.
    • National Grid Persons (NGP) or BESC (Basic Electrical Safety Competence) certification is essential.
    • Valid CSCS card.
  • Skills and Competencies:
    • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and manage a diverse workforce.
    • Excellent understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations, particularly in relation to National Grid projects.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions under pressure.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with clients, subcontractors, and stakeholders.
    • Good organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
    • Proficiency in using project management software and tools.
