Role Overview
The Principal Designer will play a crucial role in ensuring the health, safety, and regulatory compliance of our design team in regard to CDM and The Building Safety Act 2022. You will be responsible for planning, managing, monitoring, and coordinating design work to ensure projects are designed and constructed in a way that is safe for workers, future occupants, and the public.

Key Responsibilities

  • Building Safety Act Compliance:
  • Reviewing and submitting High-Risk Buildings (HRB) applications to the Building Safety Regulator (BSR). This will include support to the internal design teams in regard to assessing the high risk building criteria, building works definition and creation of the BSR Application Form.
  • Ensuring designs meet the requirements of the Building Safety Act 2022 and associated regulations by assessing, managing and monitoring the competence of the engineers and specialists involved in design
  • Help manage the 'Golden Thread' of information for HRB projects by ensuring clear communication between all duty holders
  • Principal Designer Duties:
  • Support the project teams with planning, managing, and monitoring the design work during the pre-construction and construction phases.
  • Identifying, eliminating, or controlling foreseeable risks to the health and safety of anyone affected by the design by setting out internal company standards, policies and training
  • Ensuring effective communication and cooperation between designers, contractors, and the client.
  • Help with preparing and managing the pre-construction information by ensuring designers are providing all necessary pre-construction information
  • Liaising with the Principal Contractor regarding health and safety risks 
  • Auditing and Analysis:
  • Carrying out Principal Designer audits to ensure compliance with regulations and company standards.
  • Conducting trend analysis of audit findings and project outcomes to identify areas for improvement.
  • Identifying and sharing lessons learned. Implement new guidance, policies or training where required.
  • Guidance and Policy Development:
  • Assisting in the creation and maintenance of supporting design guidance and policies.
  • Contributing to the development of best practices for design safety within the telecoms sector.
  • Keeping up to date with changes in legislation and industry standards.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration:
  • Working closely with clients, designers, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
  • Providing expert advice and guidance on design safety matters.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Extensive experience in a health and safety or within the construction industry.
  • Thorough understanding of the Building Safety Act 2022 and its implications for design.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation, including the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015)
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate (or equivalent).
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., IOSH, APS) is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • Proficient in relevant software and design tools.
