Lead Electronic Design Engineer – Hampshire
We're seeking a seasoned Lead Electronic Design Engineer to take the technical lead on the development of advanced electronic systems. In this role, you’ll be pivotal in shaping innovative, high-reliability hardware solutions alongside cross-functional teams, contributing directly to mission-critical technologies that support defence and safety.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Your role will span a broad range of activities, including:
- Leading planning efforts and estimating resource needs for new electronic design initiatives
- Owning and managing technical risks, ensuring mitigation strategies are in place
- Generating initial concepts, schematics, and detailed specifications
- Preparing documentation for design reviews and validation plans
- Conducting testing for verification, validation, and supporting factory acceptance procedures
- Ensuring traceability of all design modifications and managing proper release and archival
- Participating in peer design reviews and guiding formal design approval stages
- Carrying out electronics thermal modelling (training provided if needed)
- Leading Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) sessions
- Driving cost-effective designs that align with BOM targets and development budgets
- Identifying ways to streamline and strengthen engineering processes
- Mentoring less experienced engineers and collaborating with external design partners
- Working alongside production teams to troubleshoot issues during prototype builds
What You’ll Bring:
- Eligibility for UK Security Clearance (essential)
- A degree in Electronics Engineering or equivalent practical experience
- Strong hands-on expertise designing and laying out electronic circuits using tools such as Altium
- Solid understanding of EMC principles and best practices for compliance
- Experience incorporating JTAG into PCB designs
- Knowledge of electronic packaging and mechanical integration
- Practical experience with microcontrollers and low-level coding
- Skills in test-oriented design and defining robust test coverage strategies
- Experience with analogue circuits for sensor interfacing
- Familiarity with specifying and integrating power/battery solutions for challenging environments
- Confidence in accurately estimating task duration and working independently to deliver on time
Desirable Extras:
- Experience with thermal simulation tools (SolidWorks Electronics Cooling is a plus)
- Background in designing Intrinsically Safe (IS) electronics
- Exposure to LabVIEW or automated test environments
- Knowledge of or experience applying Defence Standards
- Hands-on skills in embedded programming using C or C++
- Experience within highly regulated sectors such as Defence or Aerospace
